Frequently Asked Questions

What is floor screed?

Traditional floor screed is a blended mixture of sand and cement.

When poured over the top of a subfloor, it provides a smooth, flat surface, ready for new floor coverings.

Floor screed can provide a subbase or act as a final covering, particularly in commercial environments.

A layer of screed can encase your underfloor heating (UFH) pipes, ensuring heat is distributed evenly and improving your home’s energy efficiency, too.

How do I know which floor screed is best for my project?

At JCW, we supply and install three types of traditional floor screeds:

  • Higher-strength sand and cement floor screed
  • Quick-drying sand and cement floor screed
  • Fibre-reinforced sand and cement floor screed

Our higher-strength floor screed contains additives which allow it to achieve a minimum pressure resistance of 30Nmm². This type of screed provides a sturdy surface for floor coverings to be laid on – making it ideal for commercial floors that endure heavy foot traffic daily.

Our quick-drying floor screed contains additives that allow for faster drying times – meaning floor coverings can be applied sooner (usually within less than 7 days!). This is ideal if you have a tight deadline to meet.

Polypropylene fibres are added to our fibre-reinforced floor screed. These offer extra strength and reduce shrinkage and cracking, which is perfect for use in industrial environments, such as factories and warehouses.

If you’re still unsure which product to choose, talk to the team today. We’ll consider your floor screeding requirements in further detail and establish which of our products will provide optimal results.

Is floor screeding expensive in Derbyshire?

A traditional sand and cement floor screed will cost between £18 and £20 per square metre.

The size of your room will impact the price of floor screeding in Derbyshire – with larger areas generally requiring more materials, time and labour to complete.

Where you’re located can affect the cost, too.

Prices in the North tend to be cheaper than they are in the South, meaning you can expect to pay less for floor screeding in Derbyshire than you would in London, for instance.

It’s also worth noting that, if our screeders have to drive a long distance to reach your site, you’ll incur additional costs to cover fuel and travel time.

For a better idea of how much floor screeding in Derbyshire will cost you, we suggest arranging a site survey. This way, our screed team can assess the job in full and quote accordingly.

Can I screed my own floor?

Screeding a floor yourself is guaranteed to save you money – but we must warn you that it involves a lot of work.

For starters, you need to mix the sand and cement properly before applying them to your subfloor – otherwise, you’ll end up with a bumpy finish.

It takes years of practice (and plenty of patience) to create a smooth, level surface. Once the screed has set, you won’t be able to remove it and start over again.

Although you’ll pay more to hire a professional for floor screeding in Derbyshire, they’ll be able to talk you through the different types of screed and help you to determine the most suitable one for your needs.

On top of this, they’ll make sure that it’s laid correctly and can advise on curing times to ensure you achieve the best possible outcome.
