Figures Show Self-Building Is On The Decline
The Number Of People Building Their Own Home Is On The Decline
We mentioned in a blog post last month that in order to help stimulate the UK self-build market a Conservative MP had put forward a bill proposing that it be made easier for people to obtain land when looking to build a home of their own.
Hopes are that it will be given the green light and even more so after recent research conducted by Barbour ABI, the government’s provider of Construction and Infrastructure Pipeline, showed that self-building applications in 2014 are down by 28% compared to 2008.
Whereas 16,792 self-build applications were made in the first three quarters of 2008, only 12,159 have been submitted in the same time period this year.
Self-build applications are down in every single region of the UK, with the biggest drop occurring in Midlands and East Anglia and Wales, which are respectively down by 35% and 62%.
The news comes as something of a surprise when you consider that there are an estimated six million people with aspirations of self-building and perhaps highlights the many existing obstacles they face in order to make their dreams a reality.
There is a housing shortage in this country and it is widely felt that self-building is a partial cure to the problem.
Work also needs to be done to dismiss the theory that the self-build route is the preserve of the rich as showcased on TV programmes such as Grand Designs. It isn’t.
If you’re one of the fortunate ones and in a position to progress with a self-build project then make sure that you appoint JCW for all your floor screeding requirements.
Floor screeding must always be conducted by experienced professionals and you won’t find a more professional firm than us.
