Frequently Asked Questions

What type of floor screed do I need?

The type of floor screed needed depends entirely on your project.

We supply three high-quality floor screeds in Sheffield.

1.      Fibre reinforced sand and cement floor screed

Fibre reinforced floor screed has polypropylene fibres added. These fibres aid with the structural properties, which in turn helps minimise shrinkage cracking. This screed has improved toughness as well as flexural strength.

2.      Higher strength floor screeds

If your building receives high levels of foot traffic, then higher strength floor screed could be the answer. This screed contains additives which enable it to achieve strengths of over 30Nmm2.

3.      Fast drying sand and cement floor screeds

Exactly as the name suggests, this floor screed is the fastest drying option available at JCW Floor Screeding. The additives within this screed allow it to dry much faster than the other options. Light foot traffic can return after two days, with heavy equipment and normal site traffic returning after just five days. If you choose to add a final floor covering on top, this can also be added after five days.

If you’re unsure which screed option is best suited to your project, get in touch.

How long does floor screed take to dry?

Once your screed is laid it will need time to dry and cure.

The length of time this drying process takes depends on the type of screed you chose, as well as the conditions it’s drying in.

For example, fibre reinforced screed needs to be left alone completely for 48 hours before you let people walk on it. After 7 days it should be able to withstand higher levels of foot traffic. It’ll take roughly 28 days before you can lay the flooring on top of the screed.

Colder conditions mean screed may take slightly longer to dry than in warmer conditions.

If your final flooring needs to be laid soon after the drying and curing process, fast drying floor screed may be the best choice for you as the final flooring can be added as little as 5 days after.

Your floor screed expert will be able to assess your site conditions and give you more specific information after they’ve laid your screed.

How much does floor screeding cost?

The cost of floor screeding depends on a variety of factors including the size of the area being screeded, your location and the type of screed you choose.

Usually, you can expect to pay between £10 – £35 per square metre for floor screed, however there are some factors that may increase this price including your location and the accessibility of your site.

Here at JCW Floor Screeding we tailor our service to match your budget, ensuring you receive the best possible experience no matter your budget.

We also work towards your timescale (where possible) so that you can meet your deadlines, even if this means working evenings and weekends.

So, to provide you with a free, no obligation quote we need to know a bit about your project.

Send some information about your requirements over to estimating@jwcgroup.co.uk – if you have your architects drawings, they would also be very helpful.

Once we’ve received this information, one of our experts will be in touch to share and discuss your quote.

How do I screed my floor?

The actual floor screeding process is quite straightforward, however a lot of time and energy needs to be invested to make sure it’s done properly.

Although it is possible to screed your floor yourself, a professional floor screeder will get the job done much more efficiently.

Step 1 – Preparing your floor

Firstly, the area being screeded will need to be prepared.

This includes moving any furniture out of the space, removing the current flooring and sweeping away any dust or debris.

Step 2 – Laying your floor screed

Next, it’s time to lay the floor screed.

Your floor will need to be divided up into smaller areas using dividers. Once you’ve divided your floor up, the screed layer can be applied, starting from the area furthest away from the door.

Once applied, the screed should be levelled off and compacted with a screed board. Once you’ve completed one section, you can move onto the next.

Step 3 – Letting your floor screed cure

Once your screed has been laid, you need to leave it to dry and cure.

The length of time this takes is determined by the type of screed you chose as well as environmental conditions. Your contractor should be able to advise you of this length of time.
