More Land Secured for Self-Build Project
There Has Been A Large Increase In The Amount Of Land Bought For Self Build Projects
In the last few months, we’ve been reporting a rather large increase in the amount of land that is being bought up to try and kick start the self-build project that Government are so keen on here in the UK.
A Oxfordshire Council Has Agreed To Buy 462 Acres
Well, there’s yet more land that has been bought in an attempt to give this project the boost it needs. A council in Oxfordshire has agreed to buy 462 acres, around 187 hectares of land which will enable hundreds of people to build their own homes.
1,900 Self-Build Properties Being Built On The MOD Site In Bicester
There is going to be up to 1,900 self-build properties being built on the Ministry of Defence site in Bicester following the purchase of the land by Cherwell District Council. The scheme is taking place at Graven Hill and it will include kit homes, group-build schemes and properties that have been designed by the owners but built by contractors. Construction on the site is due to begin in 2015.
Council leader, Barry Wood has said this is believed to be the first large-scale self-build project of its kind in the country. The council’s executive met on Monday 3rd March to agree the multimillion-pound purchase although the details of this haven’t been made public.
There’s already been a resolution agreed for the planning permission, not only for the homes but also for a primary school, pub and shops. The development is also set to have a million square foot of commercial space and is set to create up to 2,000 jobs and apprenticeships. More than half of the site will also be set aside to be used for community woodland and open space.
The MoD are going to continue to be based there and will also continue to run a warehousing operation on the site until 2019 but there will be areas of the site that will be vacated to allow roads to be built.
Speaking about the project, Counsellor Barry Wood said: “So many people dream of building their own home but are often put off by the complicated process and difficulty in finding a suitable plot of land. Cherwell has done the hard part by finding the land.”
There’s certainly plenty of positivity surrounding the self-build market these days. If you’re already on with a self-build project of your own and you’re in need of a floor screeding service, why not give us a call to see what we can offer you.
